VARAŽDIN KLIPIČ
The crispy crust and soft interior make this autochthonous homemade pastry so tempting. The skilled hands of local chefs make it from just a few ingredients and shape it into a 25-centimeter-long klipič that you must try. However, not every klipič is a Varaždin klipič, the guarantee that you will get the right one is a visit to two addresses – restaurant Bedem or The Familly.
VARAŽDIN PUMPKIN OIL
A dark green elixir with a specific taste and exceptional nutritional value is one of the protected products of the Varaždin region. Be sure to season your salad with it, and at the Bedem restaurant, which is the only restaurant in Varaždin with a Michelin recommendation, try it in combination with pumpkin ice cream and fried pumpkin seeds.
OPG (family farm) Petrović, in addition to the award-winning Varaždin pumpkin oil, makes excellent spreads and pumpkin pesto, which is also the star of desserts in their exquisite cakes or simply in chocolated pumpkin seeds.
VARAŽDIN CABBAGE
This source of health best represents the centuries-old tradition of agricultural production in the Varaždin area. It is perfect for traditional specialties such as cabbage rolls or sarma, which is even tastier wrapped in Varaždin cabbage, and you will get the true wealth of taste of Varaždin cabbage and the most vitamins when they are served to you in its simplest form – in a salad.
At the August restaurant on Varaždin’s City Market, which adheres to the “From field to table” concept, the cabbage comes directly from the hardworking housekeepers.
VARAŽDIN BUCKWHEAT
Every tiny grain of this ancient grain hides a wealth of flavor and nutrients, whether it is simple porridge or flour, flakes, semolina, pasta, crackers… All of these are products of OPG Pocedulić, which is the only one authorized to grow and market of these gluten-free cereals on the market, and which also has its House of Varaždin Buckwheat in the suburban settlement of Gornji Kućan. The restaurant Verglec takes a win with its indigenous flavors, where you can order a Varaždin roast with buckwheat porridge.
MORE THAN AN EXPERIENCE FOR THE PALATES
The Familly is more than an ordinary restaurant, besides the fact that you can treat yourself to various specialties that go well with some of the 150 or so wines on the wine list, this restaurant is also a museum of Croatian football. Its owner, the trophy coach of the Croatian national football team, Zlatko Dalić, exhibited a collection of jerseys and memorabilia, so every stay in this space reminds of some of the greatest moments of Croatian sport.
Santa Maria has one of the most charming interiors in Varaždin, characterized by colorful styles and a warm homely atmosphere. Their offer includes all the cuisines of the world, and they are best known for Mexican specialties. This restaurant is a great choice if you have children who can run freely around the fenced children’s playground while you enjoy your meal in peace.
In the Angelus restaurant you can treat yourself to excellent pizza and pasta, and you can enjoy excellent food in the rustically decorated basement area or in the shade of the beautiful terrace, right next to the Vatroslav Jagić promenade.
